Water is a limited good, which we are increasingly required to handle with care!
Sooner rather than later, we will have to get used to the idea of using only industrial and surface water to water sports fields.However, this water is usually contaminated with microbes (bacteria and algae).
Many golf courses in Germany are already in this situation. These forms of water are necessarily stored temporarily in an irrigation pond, which – especially in the summer months – leads to a significant increase in the number of microbes.Green and / or blue-green algae, E. coli, coliform germs and clostridia are detectable in most ponds. The permanent application of this contaminated water on greens, fairways and tees has damaging consequences for lawn biology and leads to unfavorable anaerobic conditions, which are supported by the low percentage of topsoil, fertilization and constant moisture.
The consequences are:
- stinky grass base layers,
- bad root growth,
- patchy inventory,
- Settlement of flat-rooted grasses (Poa annua),
- Spread of layers of algae,
- the formation of “black layers”.
In addition, playing on the golf course during irrigation (depending on the microbial concentration) can affect the health of golfers with unstable health by inhaling contaminated aerosols.
The following were found in the irrigation water as human pathogenic microbes :
- Klebsellia
- E. coli
- coliform germs
- Faecal streptococci
